Betty
A romance language expert, Betty is not just fluent in multiple languages, but enthusiastic about both learning and teaching them to others.
Since age 16, Betty has been interested in foreign languages. "When I finished high school, I didn't know what to do with my life. My parents sent me to Switzerland, where there are four official languages. It was a great experience – I had the opportunity to go to school, travel, practice speaking other languages, and be surrounded by culture. I was fluent in German, Italian, French, English, and Spanish by the time I was 25."
Being fluent in five languages afforded Betty the opportunity to work in various hotel and airline settings. Her love of foreign culture eventually took her back to school for a teaching degree. "After awhile, I felt that I needed a different type of job satisfaction, something spiritual and intellectual. So, I decided to get a degree in foreign language education, so that I could share my love of languages with others."
Today, Betty tutors students of all ages in Spanish and French. "I work with a lot of different people – middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adult professionals. All I do is one-on-one tutoring, so I have to personalize my teaching style. We all have different ways of learning, and I try to adapt to each student's individual way."
Of course, Betty has worked with some students who are less-than-enthusiastic about learning a foreign language, but she has always managed to change their attitudes. "A few of my students have told me they hated Spanish at first, but after I worked with them for awhile, they ended up changing their minds. Some of them liked the language so much, they joined the Spanish club at school!" Betty manages to encourage this kind of excitement in almost all of her students. Her passion for foreign language is definitely contagious!
